The GENDERS - Gender & Equality in Research and Science is the first university research center in Italy focused on the theme of gender equality in scientific careers and on the genderisation of the contents and methods of scientific research. It was born in 1995 within the Faculty of Political Sciences with the name "Center for Studies and Research of Women and Gender Differences" with the aim of promoting research initiatives, training and dissemination activities in the so-called 'Gender Studies'.

In 2006, the year in which it became an interdepartmental research center, the Center opened a new section on Women and Science which operates at European and international level thanks to the significant and consolidated experience acquired starting from the Universidonna project (FSE, 2006-2007 ) and three European projects in FP7: PRAGES - Practicing Gender Equality in Science (2008-2009) WHIST - Women's Careers Hitting the target: Gender Management in Scientific and Technological Research (2009-2011) and STAGES - Structural Transformation to Achieve Gender Equality in Science (2012-2020 with the sustainability plan).

The following Departments currently belong to the Center:

  • DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL SCIENCES;
  • DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCES FOR FOOD, NUTRITION AND THE ENVIRONMENT;
  • DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC AND SOVRANATIONAL LAW;
  • DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, PRODUCTION, TERRITORY AND AGROENERGY;
  • DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL AND COMMUNITY SCIENCES.

GENDERS has strengthened over time a strong vocation for multidisciplinary research; it promotes conferences, seminars, courses and other public initiatives; offers consulting and information services; participates in national and European projects.

The areas of expertise and both qualitative and quantitative research are:

  • Women and science. Research on gender inequalities in scientific careers. Monitoring and evaluation of gender equality measures in research, innovation and science.
  • Equal opportunities, work and organizations.
  • Gender medicine and equity of access to health.
  • Women and political participation.
  • Rights, non-discrimination and intersectionality.
  • Gender and welfare. Evaluation of public and corporate policies.
  • Gender and journalism: language and gender stereotypes in the media.
  • Gender, cooperation and development.
